How quickly it changes

We had shoots for two editorial clients yesterday. One of them was a cover spread that featured a stylized outside scenario. The props stylist brought some sod/grass which was messy but worth it since it looked great in camera. We can’t show any the images yet but it should be out this summer.

I dig how only one day before this we had Rasta chillin’ in the studio for some moody imagery and the next day it’s all bright and happy.

Art for Art’s Sake or….

•April 20, 2009 • Leave a Comment

…Reclaiming this crazy thing called Photography.

I’m going to refer to myself in a term that I rarely use, an artist. I’ve always found myself a bit hesitant to use that term because I feel it gets thrown around far too much.

When you look at the definition of the word ‘Art’, you find the following, “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”

So why then would I not call myself an artist? Is that not what I do in the creation of my imagery?  Works to be appreciated for their beauty and/or emotional power.

Random thoughts from someone who’s catching up

•March 23, 2009 • 1 Comment

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to write on this blog. I’ve meant to for a while now and even began a post a week or so ago. Just never finished, or began. One or the other.

The last month or so has been pretty steady. We were able to work on some interesting projects and meet some pretty cool cats. Some of it I can’t show yet since it’s not out but as soon as it is I’ll have it on my site.

mensshoot2

We shot a cover feature for Men’s Fitness Magazine a few weeks back. It was a great shoot and should be out this summer. I can’t name who we shot but let’s just say he was a great guy and was awesome in front of the camera.

A few days after that I flew out to San Antonio for a quick editorial shoot. Nothing crazy but it was cool. Traveling for a shoot can be an interesting experience. It usually goes like this: Airport, rental cars and hotels, pass by monotonous strip malls, visit local coffee shops and head to the location. Do the shoot and revisit all of the above in reverse order. Here’s some not so original images taken from the plane on the way back.

March has been pretty chill. Not too busy but steady. A couple of editorial shoots for golf, business and sports magazines. A few estimates out for ad jobs…but no confirmations yet.

I’m definitely desiring more time for personal work. But that’s a whole other issue and after reading other photographers blogs I know I’m not alone in this process. It’s the balance of making a living with your craft yet finding time to create your own personal imagery. The challenge is to equally share your talent, be it photography or another form of expression, yet still pull it back in when you need it most. There have been times where I have needed to challenge myself more. I should have realized it sooner and reclaimed my art for a period. I feel that time is now. Let’s see if I follow through.

Speaking of challenging yourself. We shot some portraits for a magazine a few nights back. The creative director and I had decided to use some physical materials to screw with the images in camera. It was a very collaborative experience and it reminded me of back in the day when I was first experimenting with photography. I would throw stuff in front of the lens or purposely hit the camera as I snapped the shutter so it would trip out the images. I shot with an old Hasselblad I received during my apprenticeship under another photographer for just over 2 years in the late 90’s. It was also an interesting shoot in the sense I am usually the director of my sets, but this was a bit more of a collaborative effort between the creative director and myself. A challenge, but a good one. I needed a change for a day and I got it. And from this experience I am already seeing ways of using this for not only personal but commercial work. Here’s two examples from Friday night. These are not the subjects that will appear in the magazine but two members of my crew. David, my first assistant and Janet my studio manager. (As with most crews they usually stand in for testing before throwing the subject in frame) Again, all coloring and/or reflections were done in camera with no photoshop craziness. We’ll see where this goes.

Not only has this been random but longer than expected. So why not end on a crazy note. This is from a shoot we did about two weeks back. We had just wrapped with the client and I decided to get in front of the camera for some crazy reason and have David shoot me jumping in the air. I really don’t know why but it felt like the thing to do at the time.

Peace.

Nike images are live.

UPDATE: .02.27.09

We have temporarily removed the images of our Nike shoot from both our website and blog as per a request from Nike. We will have them up as soon as we receive the updated files. Until then, you can still go to their site to see the stuff. Thanks, Jeff.

If you have a moment please visit NikeProCombat.com to see a few of our images on display. We shot both plates of Amare wearing the Pro Combat gear and then him with his uniform over it. We also shot the insert/catalogue shots that appear when you click on the links. They did the cool animation…We also had the cover of Nike.com for a couple of days but it’s different now. That was cool.

The All Star game was last weekend and Nike put up some freakin’ huge banners on Stoudemire’s restaurant. I had to roll by and take a few images. Why not?

We shot for Nike!

•February 13, 2009 • 1 Comment

So last week was pretty crazy. I turned 31, celebrated my 4th wedding anniversary and shot my first campaign for Nike.

I can dig that.

We had an amazing opportunity to work with Nike on their new ‘Nike Pro Combat’ line that’s being unveiled this weekend at the All Star game. And the chill thing…We would be shooting Amare Stoudemire again. This was our third time photographing him. He’s a cool cat and has such an amazing presence in front of a camera.

We also brought in a model to shoot all the detail shots of the line. This stuff is pretty sick. Let’s just put it this way, if Batman was to switch from crime fighting to basketball he’d definitely be rocking this under his uniform. And you know he’d be throwing some elbows. That’s just how he rolls.

nike2

My team (Shauna, Janet, David and Chris) rocked it out and made the shoot run smooth. And I was definitely blessed to work with such a reputable company yet find that they were just cool cats in the end.

The images are only online as of right now. I’ve seen them on various news sites. But they’ll be displayed in Nike Town stores later this year. And we’ll be adding them to the website soon.

The Not So Fun Part

In writing the following post I am approaching this topic from the view of a photographer. For that is who I am. But this post will apply to any freelancer out there. And what am I talking about?

THE BID!

(A shot of some of research documents/PDF’s from the agency/quotes from vendors/ and notes spread out on the tables that went into putting this bid together. You can also see my studio manager Janet doing research)

What not to do while driving.

•January 12, 2009 • 2 Comments

Take pictures.

I had a shoot in Vegas this past weekend and decided to drive. My usual rule is if the shoot is 6 hours or less away I’ll drive. Anything beyond that I’ll fly. The downside to driving is it gets freakin’ boring. The upside is you can bring your own gear and avoid the craziness of airports. (Example: For my recent shoot in Indiana I incurred an additional 300.00 in expenses for the basic gear I checked. And that was with renting the heavier stuff there.)

So about 3 or 4 hours in I pulled out my G10 and started shooting.

I dug how the sun was shining through the little sticker on my window.

And what post about random picture taking is complete without the ubiquitous one handed self portrait.

I stopped at the Hoover Dam for a minute. Crazy cool joint. I decided to pull out an SLR and try out my new 70-200 lens.

hooverdam

Not a shot of the dam but I dug all these powerful man made lines and structures on top of this crazy rock.

Oh and PS: Vegas is a weird joint.
